Winter Mold: What You Need to Know

Mold isn’t just a warm-weather problem. Winter conditions can create an ideal environment for mold growth, especially in areas with high humidity or poor ventilation.

  1. Condensation Issues: As warm indoor air meets cold surfaces like windows or walls, condensation can form, creating a breeding ground for mold. To prevent this, use a dehumidifier and keep your home’s humidity below 50%.

  2. Improper Ventilation: Closed windows and reduced airflow during winter can trap moisture indoors. Make sure your bathroom fan works effectively and use exhaust fans when cooking.

  3. Leaky Roofs or Pipes: Snow and ice can lead to leaks, providing moisture for mold. Regularly inspect your roof and address plumbing issues promptly.

  4. Basements and Crawl Spaces: These areas are prone to dampness year-round. Check for leaks and consider a moisture barrier if necessary.

If you spot mold, don’t wait. Small patches can be cleaned with soap and water, but extensive growth may require professional help. Protect your home and health this winter by staying vigilant.
